INSECT REPELLING PLANTS

Posted By: Ann Richards · 6/14/2013 3:30:00 PM

I love spending time out on my deck reading or visiting with friends and family.  However, there is one thing that can spoil my time outside … it’s anything that bites or stings.  I’ll sit outside under the deck’s roof through rain and storms … as long as there’s no lightning … however, if any mosquitoes show up, I head indoors.

So, I thought it was grand when I found the following info about plants that will repel bugs naturally.

FEVERFEW, repels mosquitoes and other flying, biting insects.  It’s ideal for planning around outdoor seating area, pathways and close to doorways and windows.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS, help to repel a bunch of bugs, including:  aphids, leafhoppers, spider mites, harlequin bugs and ticks.  It’s best used as a companion plant to protect other plants from insects.

Homemade Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is something I use all the time.  I’ve used it to make furniture polish, in the laundry, also on my skin.

It has relaxing properties, so adding a few drops to your bath, or on your pillow at night will help you to unwind.    It’s also antibacterial and can be mixed with a carrier oil, and used over burns and cuts to help heal the skin.  It can even be inhaled deeply to reduce congestion.  So, when I found this information I knew I wanted to share it with you.

How to Make Homemade Lavender Oil

Things you’ll need:

Enough carrier oil to fill small glass jar … (olive oil or almond oil are good choices)

Lavender flowers

Small glass jar

Rubber band

Plastic cling wrap

Strainer

Recycling

When was the last time you threw an empty glass pickle jar into the trash?  How many empty glass olive jars have you tossed into the trash?  Have you ever stuck an old window or door out by the curb hoping the trash collector would haul it away?

We’re probably all guilty of doing these things at least a few times.  We know it’s best to recycle … yet … we get busy or lazy and take the easy way out.

Though, recycling actually comes natural.  Kids do it all the time.  I remember one time when I was about nine years old spending a few hours in the garage tearing apart old broken toys in order to build a car of sorts.  My friend and I pushed each other around in it for a little while ...

About Ann

My career days started out in advertising doing everything from typical PR work, to writing and of course voice-over work. The voice-over work I started when I was still in high school. I didn’t even think of radio as an option. Though I loved recording and writing, I never thought of radio as an option for me, the typical shy type. Then one day after leaving a recording session, that my best friend had attended with me, she said, “if you don’t take your tape to a radio station or to Disney, I’m going to send it in for you”. Within a day or two another friend was going into a radio station for a meeting. So, I asked him to take my resume in with him. He did, I got hired, and after two weeks of being on the air I knew that I had found my passion.

My other passion is writing. I’ve written three books for adults and a number of personalized children’s books. Right now, I’m working on a spooky story for adults.

Most people who know me would include reading, growing vegetables and cooking as passions. They’re probably right. I'm always reading at least two books at the same time. And whenever I can’t think, I head to the kitchen and begin creating or I head for the garden. Typically, my Sheltie, Shakespeare and my Maltese, Sammy go with me. Sam has even travelled to the herb farm in southern Indiana with me several times. And when my husband Edward is travelling for business, Sam thinks he must take over being the man of the house. Sam’s cute, and Shakespeare is the sweetest. Between us we have three adult children. We try to have breakfast with them and my mom once a week. And we love cooking outside for them.

Something else that makes me very happy is just walking. My husband and I love taking walks together. Whether it’s along the canal, through a park, or in and around our neighborhood, I think we’re happiest walking and holding hands.

I am a life long resident of Indianapolis and the morning host on B105.7.
