The Most Googled Cat Questions

Have you ever sat and wondered why your cat is the way that it is? Cat people tend to be some of the most perplexed pet owners, and for good reason. Cats are fascinating creatures. Chances are even if you’ve never owned a feline friend, you’ve probably seen a viral cat video or two and still asked yourself “what goes on inside their fluffy little heads”.

We took to the internet to figure out the inner workings of your furry friends’ thoughts and behavior and we’re here to give you the scoop on your most Googled cat question.

(Spoiler: There’s no complex string theory but there are most definitely thoughts of string.)

Why do cats purr?

While there are many motives behind the iconic sound, the main purr-pose is communication. Largely, cats use purring as a way to show contentment.

Why do cats knead?

While not always the most comfortable pass time for you, cats knead as a way to mark their territory. So next time your furry friend hops up on your lap and starts pushing on you in all the wrong places, take it as a compliment.

Why do cats sleep so much?

The reason behind your furry friend’s bizarre sleep schedule is all about instincts. Being predatory animals by nature, cats are inclined to store up energy to “hunt” at night (when they’re most active).

Why do cats have whiskers?

Whiskers are an extremely sensitive organ, which helps inform your feline about their surroundings. Not only can they help them navigate the spaces around them, but they also serve as a means for communication in stressful events.

Why do cats like boxes?

This is probably the most mystifying cat question of all time, but the answer isn’t as crazy as you might think. The reason behind your cat’s affinity for boxes is the safe and comfortable feeling they get from laying in them. Guess the cats out of the bag box.

A cat named SampsonHi there. My name is Sampson. I am about 12 years old. I found myself here at the shelter because my previous owner left me behind when they moved. I can be a bit shy when we first meet. Please take some extra time with me, because once I warm up I love chin scratches! I just can’t get enough. I would love to curl up with you on a couch with a good tv show and get chin scratches. If you’ve got room on your couch, I’ve got a chin that needs to be scratched.

A cat named MeekaHi! My name is Meeka. I am about 6 years old. I am a very friendly gal. I love to be pet and will meow at you for more if you stop. I am quick to purr for you as payment for the attention. As you can see from my photo I like to roll around and show off my belly. If you are looking for a lap cat to give loves of affection to, I am you girl!

A cat named MarleyHI, I’m Marley. I am about 4 years old. I am very shy here at the shelter. I like to hang out in my cubby all curled up. Once I warm up I enjoy being pet. In fact if you stop, I will just head butt you for more. When I get really comfortable  and know I can trust you, I can be quite playful. Don’t let my age fool you. I am still basically a kitten.

A cat named Boogie Hello! I’m Boogie. I do in fact live up to my name, I enjoy rolling around and pawing at you. I really like it when you pet me. I have fallen off of my shelf here at the shelter before while people have been petting me, but don’t tell everyone that’s our secret. I have silky soft black fur and am truly a mini panther for your home. I ended up here at the shelter because my previous owner died. I can be a little slow to trust because of this. If you’re patient enough, I wil reward you with my affection and really soft purr.

A cat named NalaHey! Nala here. I am about 8 months old. They say I’m very vocal, but truth is I just like a good conversation. The shelter can be a scary place, and I’m kind of shy from being here. I do enjoy being pet and I have soft fluffy fur. You won’t want to stop petting me because of it. I’ll even let you pet me a lot so you can enjoy it. Everyone wins!

A cat named Tatter Hello. My name is Tatter. I am about 15 years old. Honestly, I am a bit of a crotchety old man. If you come to visit you’ll have to give me time to warm up to you. It may take some time but once I do warm up you can pet me forever. I like to rub my face all over everything that is near me. The walls, you hand, furniture, everything. I am also surprisingly soft, so you’ll enjoy the pets as much as I do.

A cat named MorticiaHello, I am Morticia. I am about 5 years old. I am friendly and I enjoy being pet. Only for short periods of time, when I ask for it. The other time I’ll be enjoying lounging somewhere. I am searching for someone who I can co-exist with and occasionally be pet by. Maybe even do some snuggling once in a while. When I am in the mood to be pet, I will give you head butts and rub all over your hand. If you too want to co-exist, lets meet and see how we do together.

A cat named FlorentineHello, I’m Florentine! I am about 2 years old. Still basically a kitten! I’ve been told I talk in my sleep but I don’t believe them. As you can see from my photo, I will sleep anywhere. As long as I can get comfy, it’s a good place to nap. When I’m awake I will ask you to pet me! If you’re not petting me, we should be playing. I am quite playful and still have a lot of energy.

A cat named KittyHey, I’m Kitty. I am about 8 months old. I am a very chatty cat, who would love someone just a chatty as me! As you can see from my photo I like to get attention. I also like to lounge around. I am a good mix of playful kitten and snuggle buddy.

A cat named PrincessHi, I’m Princess. I am about 2 years old. The shelter is a very scary place to me, so I hide in my cubby a lot. Please don’t let that deter you from saying hi because I love to be pet. While you are petting me I will roll around, follow your hand, and give it lots of head butts. The cubby also makes it so I can easily follow you to make you pet me more. I have the sweetest purr and the cutest face. As you can see from my photo once I am comfortable I am very curious.

A dog named TateHi there. I’m Tate! I am about 3 years old. As you can see from my photos I am very very handsome. When I went out for a Freedom Day I got lots of compliments about how well I behaved. I also really enjoyed being outside, even if it was raining. I would love to find a home where we can be in nature a lot. I also really love treats and my toys! I will be waiting here at the shelter to meet you.

A dog named TerryHello. My name is Terry. I am about 4 years old. As you can see from my photos I have some great ears and gorgeous brown eyes! I also enjoy playing with toys. A volunteer who hung out with me said that I am very gently with them. I also love to cuddle and give kisses. So what are you waiting for? How can you resist these beautiful brown eyes?

A dog named BillAs you can see from his photos, Bill has ears that can reach the sky and heart-melting puppy dog eyes. Bill is such a sweet, playful boy who just wants a loving family who will give him the exercise and care he needs. He is extremely smart and a super quick learner. He knows sit, shake, lay down and almost has mastered the stay command. He is highly treat motivated and has potential to learn even more. He would do best in a home with a big fenced in yard since the zoomies are his specialty and he is still working on his leash walking skills. What can I say… there are just so many smells outside and it’s hard for this pup not to explore and take it all in. The shelter estimated his age as 4 but anyone who meets him would say he’s younger due to his curiosity and his sometimes overly excited nature, but that’s just because he is so excited to play with you and truly loves being around people. He also loves to snuggle and fully enjoys kisses on his big puppy dog head. Since he can get a little excited when he plays (i.e loves to throw his squeaky toys around and try to catch them) a family without young children would probably be best. He shows positive interest in other dogs but it’s unknown how he would do in a multiple dog/pet household so a meet and greet would be best. It has been a joy having Bill Nye in our home and I am confident that he will be a great addition to the right person’s family!

A dog named Sarah Lee Hi there! My name is Sarah Lee, yes just like the bread! I am around 1 year old. As you can see from my photos I have a gorgeous brindle coat. I like to give kisses, get bell rubs and lean into you while you pet me. I also enjoy going out for a good walk, as long as we can cuddle when we get home. I really enjoy to roll around in the leaves, if you’re lucky you’ll get to see me do it. I can be a bit shy around new people, but I warm up quickly.

A dog named NitaHi, I’m Nita. I’m very sweet and quiet. The shelter life has me feeling a little unsure, but I warm up quickly! I would love a nice quiet home to relax in and some nice walks to go on. I like to cuddle and I take treats very gently. Come visit me today and give me a chance! Nita is about 4 years old and came into the shelter because her owner had no home and could not keep her any longer. She has been searching for her furever home for over 30 days.

A dog named CoraHi there I’m Cora! I am about 6 years old. Don’t let my age deter you from meeting me. I LOVE to play! I like playing with toys and with a snuffle mat! If you’re not familiar with a snuffle mat it’s this cool toy with fleece strips that the volunteers and staff hide treats in. I had a blast finding all of the treats they had hid for me. When I’m not playing, I’m cuddling. Both of those things are really great. I am not sure why I am still here at the shelter when I am so much fun? Hi, my name is Angel and I’m about 7 years old. I’m a super sweet girl who loves to play fetch and chase tennis balls. I’m also happy snuggling and relaxing. As you can see from my photo I can concentrate really well if there are treats involved. I can even catch them! I know sit and love belly rubs. I’ll be waiting at the shelter to meet you!
