Another Key to Better Communication: Active Listening

In my previous blog, I touched on one of two key parts of better communication – assertiveness. Today I wanted to focus on the other important element to communicating with others – active listening.

Active listening is the ability to let your partner know you understand by restating what they said and acknowledging their feelings. Sometimes this can feel super basic or robotic, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

An example might be: “I understand that you really want to go on vacation and how it will be helpful with all the stress you’ve been experiencing.”

What you’ve done is ensure your spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend you heard what they want and that you understand their feelings. When someone feels like they have been heard and understood, it’s one of the best feelings in the world. We are conveying to them that they are important and they matter. Imagine the difference that would make in your relationship?

So if your relationships are struggling or strained, make it a point to actively listen to your partner – restating what they said and conveying you understand their feelings – it will make a difference in your communication and relationship.
