It’s been said our two biggest resources are time and money. We often talk about how we “spend our time” or how we “spend our money,” but I would encourage you to look at both differently when it comes to your relationships.  It’s time and money invested.

I was reminded of this during my recent vacation. For the first time ever, I took a trip with just my daughter Olivia. She’s in her final year of high school at Fishers High School and I realize she will be moving on and out in life over the next few years.

I could come up with a million excuses why not to take a trip or spend the money and many of them would be wise, but the 5 days I got to spend with her were priceless. Memories were made, as time and yes, money was invested.

I’m not saying to not worry about money or to be reckless with it, but I will never look back on the money I spent on the trip with regret, because it was money invested in my relationship with my daughter, not spent.

These same types of thoughts have crossed my mind when I think of my aging parents.  Both are in their mid-70’s and my dad is slowly losing his battle with dementia. I could use a three-drive to Chicago or gas money, as excuses to not go see them frequently or I could see it as investment into two people who have loved me and formed me.

One could argue that between time and money, time is truly the more precious resource. You will have opportunities to make more money, but you can’t make more time. Whether it’s with a child or an aging parent, let’s choose how we invest our time and money wisely. We will not regret it.
