Tune up Tuesday!  In addition to hosting mornings on B105.7.. I work in the afternoons as a therapist at Evolve Therapy in Greenwood, IN.  On Tuesday mornings I share a nugget you may be able to use to “tune up” a relationship in your life.  Last week, we talked about the importance of communicating your needs and feelings to your partner.  Today, the best way to do that…

You want to express your feelings in a way your partner can hear them.  That means don’t start with anything critical.  That would sound like sentences that start with…

  • You should…
  • Why can’t you..
  • I can’t believe you…
  • Etc.

Instead, try starting sentences with things like…

  • Can you help me____?
  • How about if we____?

Saying we instead of you is much less likely to make someone feel attacked.

In summary, never underestimate the importance of a soft start.  If you start at a 10, it’s pretty unlikely that conversation is going to  go well.
