Listen Live

Giving thanks seems like an appropriate topic for today’s Tune Up Tuesday.  In addition to hosting this morning show, I work in the afternoons as a therapist (at Evolve Therapy in Greenwood, Indiana) and so I share some things I’ve learned in that role with you on Tuesday mornings.  You may be able to use these nuggets to “tune up” your relationship, if you will.  Today you may be expressing gratitude in your relationship, but you may not be doing it in the best way.

A new study finds it’s better to thank your partner for being helpful rather than focusing on their sacrifice.  Let me give you an example – “I wouldn’t have been able to make this lovely dinner without your help in the kitchen.”  That’s better than.. “I know it was annoying for you to help me in the kitchen when there were so many other things you could’ve been doing.”

Highlighting your partner’s kindness and ability to meet your needs drives connection and encourages more understanding and meeting of needs.  Doing it the other way could lead to disconnection and even resentment.
